School of Sewing: Garment Edition
Dates: Saturdays, 9:00am - 12:00pm (specific dates below)
We are very excited about this course and the lovely things you'll be making for yourself! This skills-based course will take you through a variety of the most important garment techniques.
One key technique (more details below) will be covered each class meeting, while continually covering several integral skills for any garment sewing project, such as reading a pattern, selecting a size, finding fit, finishing techniques, etc.
The text for this class, The Sewtionary, is a fabulous reference tool, especially for garment sewists. During the course, we will use it as a menu of options for different patterns, learning how and why a particular technique may be used for a particular sewing project.
Students will choose between a variety of patterns based on their level and interest. We will start with a dress, focusing specifically on fit and basic construction/finishing techniques, covering a variety of fitting elements (again, depending on each students' ability and interest level) such as ruching, pleats, gathering, french darts, bust darts, etc. From there, we will cover knit garments (students will choose between a variety of patterns- maxi dress, shift dress, shirt, etc.), learning how to find the right stitch for a given weight and type of knit, how to use a double needle and cover-stitch. Lastly, we'll cover skirts, learning to fit the bottom half of the body, how to insert an invisible zipper and/or button holes and buttons (depending on the pattern), while reviewing gathering, pleats, darts, and negative ease. Are you thinking, what does all this mean?! Well then, this class is for you!
This class is intended to build upon each students' skill set. Beginners and intermediate students alike will gain confidence and learn new techniques during this course. We will work with each student, ensuring the best learning opportunities for personal learning needs. Want to learn to change a pattern? Want to master the zipper? Want to learn to work with challenging fabric? Whatever your specific needs, we will help each student achieve their learning goals throughout this course.
